Cambrian Rally goes green

A commitment to making the event nett carbon neutral by 2025 has been made by the organisers of the Visit Conwy Cambrian Rally.

Through working closely with other parties involved in preserving the environment in Wales, they plan to promote good sustainability practice throughout the planning and delivery of the event as far as is reasonably practical, and to help the event’s partners, clients and suppliers do the same.

Joint clerk of the course Alyn Edwards explained: “The rally runs through some of the most beautiful and environmentally sensitive countryside in the UK and as organisers we are very conscious of our responsibility to reduce the event’s impact on this important environment.

“We will give full commitment to this by setting annual environment objectives, and will provide information, training, or consultation with relevant stakeholders to enable them to carry out their environmental responsibilities, and encourage knowledge sharing.

“We will also ensure all legal requirements relating to the environment are met or exceeded and ensure the guidelines of the FIA Institute Environmental Accreditation are met where practicable.”

To achieve this the organisers have set themselves the following forward objectives:

  • Offset all calculated carbon by planting trees within the North Wales area.
  • Meet the standards of a 1 Star FIA Institute Environmental Accreditation.
  • Become one of the first events in the UK to demonstrate electric eehicles within Rallying.
  • Ensure that all non-competitive organisers’ vehicles are hybrid and/or EV.
  • Introduce a ‘Green Cambrian Rally’ touring event alongside the main rally, the first of its kind in the UK.

For this year’s October 30 event, it’s hoped to introduce hybrid and/or electric vehicles to the course car team. Plans are also well advanced to make it paperless asfar as practicable by using a digital noticeboard Every effort will be made to minimise impact on ground and water contamination within the service park, and to encourage waste reduction and separation, recycling bins will be provided within the service park and rally HQ. The intention is to also to reduce vehicle movement during the course of the event as much as possible.
