Asphalt specialist and Irish Tarmac Championship front-runner Meirion Evans will bring the Castrol brand back to the Motorsport UK British Rally Championship in 2022, driving a Melvyn Evans Motorsport Volkswagen Polo GTi with support from the iconic motorsport lubricant giant.
Evans and co-driver Jonathan Jackson will tackle their maiden BRC1 championship season, starting with this weekend’s Jim Clark Rally and have revealed a stunning new livery ahead of the two-day assault in the Scottish Borders.
The 26-year-old Welshman will go head-to-head with a stellar line up of British Championship protagonists including four-time champion Keith Cronin and last year’s BRC runner-up and now teammate, Osian Pryce. Having last contested the BRC as a Junior in the two-wheel-drive era, Evans is now making his top-flight debut and is delighted to be competing at the sharp end of the British Championship.
“It’s a great moment for me and the team to be able to finally contest the British Rally Championship and with such an iconic automotive brand in Castrol” says Evans.
“The BRC looks great this season and has a very different feel to it with some new names battling with experienced champions towards the front and I’m really looking forward to being part of that fight. We have shown we have some great pace on asphalt over in Ireland as well as at home, so we are hopeful of a positive result. But I`m aware it will be a very close fight and I`m excited to see what we can do. The car looks amazing, and I must thank Castrol, The Scan Station, Pirelli, RallyCover, WM Plant Hire & Glennerster Consulting for enabling us to contest the series, its going to be a very exciting season.”
Evans has shown his capabilities on asphalt with second overall at the Galway International and West Cork Rally in Ireland already this season. He also won the Scottish closed road Argyll Rally in 2021 and could well add the Jim Clark Rally to his list of achievements this weekend.
