Last year’s Junior British Rally Championship runner-up Eamonn Kelly heads into this weekend’s Get Connected Rali Ceredigion with a sniff at the 2022 title with two rounds to spare.
The twenty-three-year-old Co. Donegal driver has enjoyed a blistering season behind the wheel of his Ford Fiesta Rally2, taking two wins, one on each surface, and never straying outside of the podium spots all year long.
A perfectly played Joker on the Beatson’s Building Supplies Jim Clark Rally bagged him an additional five points to his tally and would prove vital in his title chase. Those five points are the difference between him and nearest rival Kyle White with drop scores at play, meaning if Kelly wins in Wales he can’t be caught and; he scoops the title.
With Joker points only applying to drivers, co-driver Conor Mohan will potentially have to wait until the Trackrod to claim his win, but ahead of all the Junior contenders is over 80 miles of flat-out moorland special stages, with Saturday night’s offering set to test even the most experienced of driver.
Add in an on-form Kyle White, a rapid Ioan Lloyd, an ever-improving Johnnie Mulholland and the return of Joe Kelly and its by no means a done deal.
But Eamonn could well have one eye on that supported WRC Drive in a Hyundai Motorsport Customer Racing i20 N Rally2 come Sunday afternoon.
