Charlie Mathewson steps up to Junior BRC with Rally4 move

After years of success in the junior ranks, Charlie Mathewson is set to take the next big step in his rally career by joining the Junior British Rally Championship for the 2026 season.

Mathewson, who has been rallying since he was just 14 years old, has already built an impressive CV. A two-time J1000 English champion and runner-up in the Scottish Championship, the young driver has consistently demonstrated both pace and maturity beyond his years.

Having turned 17 in January 2025, Mathewson made the move into senior rallying last season, contesting the highly competitive Mini Rally Challenge alongside long-time co-driver Ian Bass. The pair enjoyed a sensational campaign, securing the asphalt, gravel and overall championship titles in a clean sweep that highlighted his readiness for the next level.

For 2026, Mathewson teams up with co-driver Josh Carr as the duo prepare to campaign a Peugeot 208 Rally4 in the Junior BRC. The step into Rally4 machinery and the Junior BRC places him on the same ladder that has launched many of Britain’s top rallying talents.

The plan is already in motion, with the team hoping to shake down the car on the iconic stages of North Wales in the coming weeks as preparations intensify ahead of the season opener.

Charlie’s rally ambitions also add another dimension to a well-known family name. He is part of the Mathewson family, famed for the hit TV series Bangers and Cash and the renowned auction house Mathewsons Classic Cars. While classic cars may be the family trade, Charlie’s focus is firmly on modern rally machinery and forging his own path in competitive motorsport.
