Rising star Ioan Lloyd will make the leap into the hotly contested Junior British Rally Championship this season, piloting a Peugeot Sport 208 Rally4.
Lloyd, just 19 from Llandysul in Wales is son of well-known motorsport preparation expert and supplier Gareth, who owns West Wales Rally Spares and will make his BRC debut at the forthcoming Corbeau Seats Rally Tendring & Clacton with co-driver Sion Williams.
“This year is going to be very much a learning year for us” says Lloyd.
“With the step up to the Rally4 category as well as our first season where we can recce the stages and write our own notes, it’s very much a school year for myself and Sion! Most of all, our goal is to enjoy it all and gain as much experience as we can.”
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Lloyd’s motorsport journey began at a tender age thanks to his family’s passion for rallying and at the age of 14, he contested the J1000 Junior championship in a Nissan Micra, instantly catching the rallying bug. It wasn’t long before he was in a Ford Escort Mk2 before switching back to front-wheel-drive and a Peugeot 208 R2.
Lloyd scooped the BTRDA Series R2 Rally Cup and Junior R2 Cup on the gravel, rounding off his 2021 campaign with the prestigious 2300 Club John Easson Award and looked ahead to 2022 as the next career step.
“The BRC seemed to be our natural progression,” he says.
“I think it’s a fantastic championship with a great variety in rounds, and the competition is seriously strong. In fact, without a doubt, it’s going to be savage. [There are] some really quick guys entered in the championship so I`m looking forward to competing against some strong opposition.”
