Waugh aiming for progression in maiden BRC season

Despite only starting his rallying career in 2022, Steve Waugh will embark on his maiden British Rally Championship campaign this season, driving a Fiesta R2T in the BRC4 category.

Waugh, 28 from Dyserth in Wales began his competitive term in a Honda Civic Type R just 12 months ago, contesting the BTRDA gravel series but will now step into the BRC and aim to follow in the footsteps of his grandfather with a fascinating plan for progression in the coming seasons.

Having spent four years as a lead technician for the M-Sport World Rally Team, working on vehicles driven by the best drivers in the World including the Championship winning seasons with Sebastian Ogier, Waugh will take on his biggest challenge to date by stepping into the BRC, a series his Grandfather Gavin once contested.

And this is just one rung on the ladder for the ambitious driver.

“My grandfather competed in the British Championships in the 1970s alongside the names of Russell Brooks, Jimmy McRae, and Ari Vatanen,” he says.

“I have a three-year plan and competitive progression is the real focus. Starting from my first ever rally in the Honda in February 2022 (Riponian Rally), I hope to be competing in the BRC in Rally2 machinery during the final rounds of the 2024 championship.”

Backed by Rallyemerchandise, Waugh and co-driver Mark Broadbent will kick off their campaign at the impressive M-Sport facility, home of the Malcolm Wilson Rally. The event is one of two events on the BRC roster he has contested before, but many will be new to the debutant.

“I`m looking to learn the new car and BRC events ready for 2024” he continues.

“Ypres Rally looks great, but the competition will be tough from the BRC Juniors as we compete in similar machinery, so I`m looking forward to challenging them for stage times.”

“The season ahead will be full of challenges as the pace increases but opportunities to compete at this level don’t come along often so I aim to make the most of every Rally and enjoy every experience.”
